Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I've been Michael Jordan in Latin countries for years. I know what I mean to all Latinos and what this game means to them. Baseball is in their blood.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I'm focussing on what I haven't attained, not what I have. A lot has come to me early. I don't want to get consumed with that. Winners live in the present tense. People who come up short are consumed with future or past. I want to be living in the now. My goal is to play one full game in the now, but I haven't even gotten past the first inning yet. I start thinking about where my mom is or if my dogs have been fed. The average human has 2,000 thoughts a day. The really accomplished have 1,500 because you can focus longer. I need to learn how to focus longer.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Whether I hit .260 or .320, the bottom line here is to win.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I've never experienced- besides the birth of my two daughters-the feeling of winning a world championship in New York in the new stadium. It's something I'll never forget.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Eventually, my W-2 income will wind down, and my investments can actually make that up.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

If my team could win and I hit .240, I wouldn't care. The only thing I want to do is win. That's what I play the game for.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Now I just have an opportunity to come out and play baseball and have fun, really continue to focus on what I did in '09—divorce myself of personal achievements and really buy into the whole team concept of winning ballgames. What can I do today to help the team win? It was the greatest year of my baseball career.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I feel like I owe the Yankee fan base my A-game.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I just want to be able to communicate with my fan base.

@AROD

I've done a lot of growing up and realized a lot of things.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Back then it was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young. I was stupid.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I just hope that as I get older, I calm down and enjoy the moment, enjoy the great gifts that God has given me.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I'm grateful for every day.

Alex Rodriguez

I never like to think about going back; I only look forward.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

You get to a point where you get tired of being stupid and selfish and not being honest with yourself.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I have a big scar on my thigh from a dog bite by my German shepherd. His name was Ripper. He was trying to get in a fight with another dog, and I tried to break it up, and he got me pretty good.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I'm not giving up. I have tremendous faith, and hopefully there's a couple more chapters to this book. And hopefully there's a happy ending somewhere. I have faith.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

My daughters think I am a terrible cook, but I try really hard. I would really like to be a better cook.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

The births of my two daughters were the two greatest moments of my life.

Alex Rodriguez

My mother's the most special person in my life ... I consider her my MVP: Most Valuable Parent.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I kept thinking my father would come back, But he never did.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

If my life depended on it - if my daughter's life depended on it - I'd want Mariano Rivera closing. Wouldn't you?

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I don't like talking about my relationships.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I don't trust anyone except a very, very few people.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I had a very complex childhood, and when I met my wife, because she has a master's in psychology, she promoted me into getting help. It really has helped. I'm not healed yet, but I'm working on some issues I had as a child.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

My girls are great at making fun of Dad. They're never impressed with anything I do. I love that. I hope that never changes.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Having the respect of your peers means the world to me.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I've waited for a long time. The championship is back where it belongs—in New York City.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I've been humbled. I've been through a lot. And I can't be happier with the way the Steinbrenner family, the coaches and players and the city of New York has supported me.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I love New York.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Walking the streets of New York, a lot of people are cheering me on. It feels good.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

There's no place like New York. And I found out that until you go through it for a season, you really don't know it.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I think it's just getting comfortable in New York City, comfortable in your own skin.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Alex is going to be among the elite. If he comes even close to the season he had last year, he'll be in his own league. You try to compare him to somebody, but you can't. He is the only one who has done what he has done.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Alex is playful, enthusiastic, and cheerful. He's fun to have around.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

He is what baseball needs right now. He respects the game, has a lot of class and image most people would pay for. I wish my daughter could marry him, but she's only two years old.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

He learned in one or two years what it took me ten years to learn. He uses the whole field, foul line to foul line.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

I'm Alex's biggest fan. I brag on him so much that my teammates are sick and tired of me talking about him. Last year we talked all the time, especially early in the season. We both knew if we didn't get off to a good start, we might be shipped out.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Last season, Alex probably did Edgar (Martinez) better than Edgar did. It's amazing. With Alex, success comes with his strength, with his timing, with his weight shift, with his hands. Another year of two like that, kids will all be copying Alex. A lot of them probably are now.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Money and fame are like dust. You aren't worth anything if you don't stay the same person you were before you had them. – Lourdes Navarro (Alex Rodriguez's mother)

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

Of course I voted for him as Player of the Year; who wouldn't? He took some inside-out swings against us that landed ten rows deep in right-center. He has done some amazing things at the most demanding position other than catcher. And he's what, only twenty-one? When I was twenty-one, I was sitting in class thinking I was going to be a high school teacher. He's out winning a batting title.

Alex Rodriguez
@AROD

The great thing is that he's always looking to improve. How good can he be? Well, we're talking about a guy who is Hall of Fame caliber.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

The fastest way to break the cycle of perfectionism and become a fearless mother is to give up the idea of doing it perfectly - indeed to embrace uncertainty and imperfection.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

The more we refuse to buy into our inner critics - and our external ones too - the easier it will get to have confidence in our choices, and to feel comfortable with who we are.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

I think while all mothers deal with feelings of guilt, working mothers are plagued by guilt on steroids!

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

You need to be able to nurture yourself in order to be a good mother, good at your job, good at servicing your community. I really believe women can do it all, but they can't do it all at the expense of their health, their sleep, and their sense of well-being.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Fearlessness is the mother of reinvention.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

My mother was a continual source of wisdom and great advice...she taught me that there is always a way around a problem-you've just got to find it. Keep trying doors; one will eventually open. She also taught me to accept failure as part and parcel of life. It's not the opposite of success; it's an integral part of success. I talk a lot about learning to become fearless in your approach to life. But fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It's the mastery of fear. It's all about getting up one more time than you fall down.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

I was lucky in that I had a mother that was full of this colloquial wisdom and she used to say to me 'You know, failure is not the opposite of success, it's the stepping stone to success. There is nobody who has not failed along the way.' So I think its very important for young women, especially as they are starting in life, to recognize that because otherwise, they only see people's success. So, when I speak, I speak of my failures.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Being a mother is the role I'm most proud of.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

The first and most important step is to realize that, as my mother used to say, fearlessness isn't the absence of fear, but the mastery of fear. It's not that you never have fear, but that you don't let your fears stop you.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Often, you'll fail. But, as my mother also taught me, failure isn't the opposite of success - it's a stepping stone to success.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

I come from a Greek household. My mother wouldn't let the FedEx man come in without eating.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

The most effective means for restoring the integrity of our electoral process, and repairing the public's tattered faith in its elected representatives, is through the full public financing of political campaigns. It's the mother of all reforms: the one reform that makes all other reforms possible. After all, he who pays the piper calls the tune. If someone's going to own the politicians, it might as well be the American people.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Trying to be Supermom is as futile as trying to be Perfect Mom. Not going to happen.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

There is nothing like becoming a mom to fill you with fear.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

My mother would constantly say to me: 'Don't miss the moment', because really that is all we have. And so often our minds take us to the future, either worrying about the future or judging our past

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

The time-famine we are talking about is really what drains us, because it means we are not here. We are somewhere else with our minds

I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

It's not 'What do I want to do?', it's 'What kind of life do I want to have?'

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Have you notices that when we die, our eulogies celebrate our lives very differently from the way society defines success?

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

We forget we're mostly water till the rain falls and every atom in our body starts to go home.

@AriannaHuff

Today we often use deadlines—real and imaginary—to imprison ourselves.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Imagine how our culture, how our lives, will change when we begin valuing go-givers as much as we value go-getters.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Treat people like family, and they will be loyal and give their all.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Never let life's Iagos—flatterers, dissemblers—onto your train.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

And yet we spend so much time and effort and energy on those resume entries—entries that lose all significance as soon as our heart stops beating.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Why do we spend so much of our limited time on this earth focusing on all the things that our eulogies will never cover?

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

We are not on this earth to accumulate victories, things, and experiences, but to be whittled and sandpapered until what's left is who we truly are.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Too many of us leave our lives—and, in fact, our souls—behind when we go to work.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Being connected in a shallow way to the entire world can prevent us from being deeply connected to those closest to us—including ourselves.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Countless things in our daily lives can awaken the almost constant state of wonder we knew as children. But sometimes to see them we must look through a different set of eyes.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

In our daily lives, moving from struggle to grace requires practice and commitment.

Arianna Huffington
@AriannaHuff

Moving ourselves to the background and others to the foreground is evidence that the (spiritual) search is achieving its purpose.

Aristotle

The energy of the mind is the essence of life.

Aristotle

The truly good and wise man will bear all kinds of fortune in a seemly way, and will always act in the noblest manner that the circumstances allow.

The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival.

Aristotle

The gods too are fond of a joke.

Aristotle

The quality of life is determined by its activities.

Aristotle

Aristotle

The actuality of thought is life.

And the best way to strengthen willpower and give students a leg up, studies indicate, is to make it into a habit.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

As people strengthened their willpower muscles in one part of their lives—in the gym, or a money management program—that strength spilled over into what they ate or how hard they worked. Once willpower became stronger, it touched everything.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

But to change an old habit, you must address an old craving. You have to keep the same cues and rewards as before, and feed the craving by inserting a new routine.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Champions don't do extraordinary things. They do ordinary things, but they do them without thinking, too fast for the other team to react. They follow the habits they've learned.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Change might not be fast and it isn't always easy. But with time and effort, almost any habit can be reshaped.

Charles Duhigg

Companies aren't families. They're battlefields in a civil war.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Giving employees a sense of control improved how much self-discipline they brought to their jobs.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Good leaders seize crises to remake organizational habits.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Habits are powerful, but delicate. They can emerge outside our consciousness, or can be deliberately designed. They often occur without our permission, but can be reshaped by fiddling with their parts. They shape our lives far more than we realize—they are so strong, in fact, that they cause our brains to cling to them at the exclusion of all else, including common sense.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Habits, scientists say, emerge because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

How are you going to study tonight? What are you going to do tomorrow? How do you know you're ready for your test?' It trained me to set goals.

I think I'm smart, and I know I was a good mom. But there wasn't a lot I could point to and say, that's why I'm special.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you believe you can change – if you make it a habit – the change becomes real.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you want to do something that requires willpower—like going for a run after work—you have to conserve your willpower muscle during the day.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

It is facile to imply that smoking, alcoholism, overeating, or other ingrained patters can be upended without real effort. Genuine change requires work and self-understanding of the cravings driving behaviours.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Rather, to change a habit, you must keep the old cue, and deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Simply giving employees a sense of agency- a feeling that they are in control, that they have genuine decision-making authority – can radically increase how much energy and focus they bring to their jobs.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Small wins are a steady application of a small advantage.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

So at most companies, an unspoken compact emerges: It's okay to be ambitious, but if you play too rough, your peers will unite against you. On the other hand, if you focus on boosting your own department, rather than undermining your rival, you'll probably get taken care of over time.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Someday soon, say predictive analytics experts, it will be possible for companies to know our tastes and predict our habits better than we know ourselves.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Studies have documented that families who habitually eat dinner together seem to raise children with better homework skills, higher grades, greater emotional control, and more confidence.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The best agencies understood the importance of routines. The worst agencies were headed by people who never thought about it, and then wondered why no one followed their orders.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The Golden Rule of Habit Change: You can't extinguish a bad habit, you can only change it.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The key to victory was creating the right routines.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

There's nothing you can't do if you get the habits right.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

There's a natural instinct embedded in friendship, a sympathy that makes us willing to fight for someone we like when they are treated unjustly.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

This is how willpower becomes a habit: by choosing a certain behavior ahead of time, and then following that routine when an inflection point arrives.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

This is the real power of habit: the insight that your habits are what you choose them to be.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Typically, people who exercise, start eating better and becoming more productive at work. They smoke less and show more patience with colleagues and family. They use their credit cards less frequently and say they feel less stressed. Exercise is a keystone habit that triggers widespread change.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

When a habit emerges, the brain stops fully participating in decision making. It stops working so hard, or diverts focus to other tasks. So unless you deliberately fight a habit—unless you find new routines—the pattern will unfold automatically.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Whether selling a new song, a new food, or a new crib, the lesson is the same: If you dress a new something in old habits, it's easier for the public to accept it.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Willpower isn't just a skill. It's a muscle, like the muscles in your arms or legs, and it gets tired as it works harder, so there's less power left over for other things.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

A habit is a formula our brain automatically follows: When I see a cue, I will do a routine in order to get a reward. To re-engineer that formula, we need to begin making choices again.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

How we eat and sleep and talk to our kids, how we unthinkingly spend our time, attention and money — those are habits that we know exist. And once you understand that habits can change, you have the freedom and the responsibility to remake them. Once you understand that habits can be rebuilt, the power of habit becomes easier to grasp and the only option left is to get to work.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you want to make yourself more sensitive to the small details in your work, cultivate a habit of imagining, as specifically as possible, what you expect to see and do when you get to your desk. Then you'll be prone to notice the tiny ways in which real life deviates from the narrative inside your head.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The problem is that your brain can't tell the difference between bad and good habits, and so if you have a bad one, it's always lurking there, waiting for the right cues and rewards.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

This process within our brains is a three-step loop. First, there is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. Then there is the routine, which can be physical or mental or emotional. Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future: the habit loop.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Habit Change Framework: Identify the routine, Experiment with rewards, Isolate the cue.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Even though it's hard to learn how to back your car out the driveway at first, once it becomes a habit, you can do it almost automatically and think about something else, like the meeting that you need to go to today or what's on the radio.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Grit, which they defined as the tendency to work strenuously toward challenges, maintaining effort and interest over years despite failure, adversity, and plateaus in progress.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

But conserving mental effort is tricky, because if our brains power down at the wrong moment, we might fail to notice something important, such as a predator hiding in the bushes or a speeding car as we pull onto the street. So our basal ganglia have devised a clever system to determine when to let habits take over. It's something that happens whenever a chunk of behavior starts or ends.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The only way to reduce errors by 70 percent was to make every single employee, in effect, a quality assurance auditor. Everyone had to take responsibility for catching mistakes. But most factory workers didn't know enough about the engines to identify every small defect as it occurred. The only solution, managers decided, was a massive retraining effort. Except

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

You can't suddenly say, 'I want a brand new habit tomorrow,' and expect it to be easy and effortless.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

General Atomics, the progenitor of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, started life in 1955 when a major military contractor, General Dynamics, feared that the military hardware market might dry up. It began exploring peacetime uses of atomic energy, but abandoned the effort when cold-war military spending took off.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

There's something really powerful about groups and shared experiences. People might be skeptical about their ability to change if they're by themselves, but a group will convince them to suspend disbelief. A community creates belief.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Belief is easier when it occurs within a community.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The same process that makes AA so effective—the power of a group to teach individuals how to believe—happens whenever people come together to help one another change. Belief is easier when it occurs within a community.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you identify the cues and rewards, you can change the routine. At least, most of the time. For some habits, however, there's one other ingredient that's necessary: belief.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Later, he would famously write that the will to believe is the most important ingredient in creating belief in change.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

We call it 'psychological safety,'  she said. Psychological safety is a shared belief, held by members of a team, that the group is a safe place for taking risks.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

habits are most malleable when the Golden Rule of habit change is applied: If we keep the same cue and the same reward, a new routine can be inserted. But that's not enough. For a habit to stay changed, people must believe change is possible. And most often, that belief only emerges with the help of a group.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Belief seems critical. You don't have to believe in God, but you do need the capacity to believe that things will get better.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

I wouldn't have said this a year ago—that's how fast our understanding is changing, said Tonigan, the University of New Mexico researcher, but belief seems critical. You don't have to believe in God, but you do need the capacity to believe that things will get better.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The evidence is clear: If you want to change a habit, you must find an alternative routine, and your odds of success go up dramatically when you commit to changing as part of a group. Belief is essential, and it grows out of a communal experience, even if that community is only as large as two people.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

It wasn't God that mattered, the researchers figured out. It was belief itself that made a difference. Once people learned how to believe in something, that skill started spilling over to other parts of their lives, until they started believing they could change. Belief was the ingredient that made a reworked habit loop into a permanent behavior.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

For a habit to stay changed, people must believe change is possible. And most often, that belief only emerges with the help of a group.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Most of the choices we make each day may feel like the products of well-considered decision making, but they're not. They're habits.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Between calculated risk and reckless decision-making lies the dividing line between profit and loss.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

However, to modify a habit, you must decide to change it. You must consciously accept the hard work of identifying the cues and rewards that drive the habits' routines, and find alternatives. You must know you have control and be self-conscious enough to use it - and every chapter in this book is devoted to illustrating a different aspect of why that control is real.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

There is a woman named Wendy Wood, who did a study when she was at Duke, and she followed around college students to try to figure out how much of their day was decision-making versus how much was habit. And what she found was that about 45 percent of all the behaviors that someone did in a day was habit.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The discovery of the habit loop is important because it reveals a basic truth: When a habit emerges, the brain stops fully participating in decision making. It stops working so hard, or diverts focus to other tasks.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Rather, productivity is about making certain choices in certain ways. The way we choose to see ourselves and frame daily decisions; the stories we tell ourselves, and the easy goals we ignore; the sense of community we build among teammates; the creative cultures we establish as leaders: These are the things that separate the merely busy from the genuinely productive.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The paradox of learning how to make better decisions is that it requires developing a comfort with doubt. There

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Make a chore into a meaningful decision, and self-motivation will emerge.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Keystone habits transform us by creating cultures that make clear the values that, in the heat of a difficult decision or a moment of uncertainty, we might otherwise forget.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

We have to make decisions, and that includes deciding what deserves our attention.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Bureaucrats and politicians, rather than making decisions, were responding to cues with automatic routines in order to get rewards such as promotions or reelection.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Models help us choose where to direct our attention, so we can make decisions, rather than just react.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

All we can do is learn how to make the best decisions that are in front of us, and trust that, over time, the odds will be in our favor.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The Agile methodology, as it came to be known, emphasized collaboration, frequent testing, rapid iteration, and pushing decision making to whoever was closest to a problem.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Many of our most important decisions are, in fact, attempts to forecast the future.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Good decision making is contingent on a basic ability to envision what happens next.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

How do we learn to make better decisions? In part, by training ourselves to think probabilistically. To do that, we must force ourselves to envision various futures—to hold contradictory scenarios in our minds simultaneously—and then expose ourselves to a wide spectrum of successes and failures to develop an intuition about which forecasts are more or less likely to come true.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

This, ultimately, is one of the most important secrets to learning how to make better decisions. Making good choices relies on forecasting the future. Accurate forecasting requires exposing ourselves to as many successes and disappointments as possible.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Every choice we make in life is an experiment. Every day offers fresh opportunities to find better decision-making frames.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you can become more motivated, more focused, better at setting goals and making good decisions, then you're a long way down the path to becoming more productive.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Productivity is about recognizing choices that other people often overlook. It's about making certain decisions in certain ways.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

You're helping us understand how a decision becomes an automatic behavior.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you need to improve your focus and learn to avoid distractions, take a moment to visualize, with as much detail as possible, what you are about to do.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Determined and focused people tend to work harder and get tasks done more promptly. They stay married longer and have deeper networks of friends. They often have higher-paying jobs. But this questionnaire is not intended to test personal organization. Rather, it's designed to measure a personality.

If you focus on changing or cultivating keystone habits, you can cause widespread shifts. However, identifying keystone habits is tricky. To find them, you have to know where to look.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Giving everyone new habits has become a focus of the church.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

At the core of that education is an intense focus on an all-important habit: willpower. Dozens of studies show that willpower is the single most important keystone habit for individual success.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you want to do a better job of paying attention to what really matters, of not getting overwhelmed and distracted by the constant flow of emails and conversations and interruptions that are part of every day, of knowing where to focus and what to ignore, get into the habit of telling yourself stories.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

They learn how to distract themselves from temptations. And once you've gotten into that willpower groove, your brain is practiced at helping you focus on a goal.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

They focused on the craving for that reward when temptations arose, cultivated the craving into a mild obsession. And their cravings for that reward, researchers found, crowded out the temptation to drop the diet. The craving drove the habit loop.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

It's not just individuals who are capable of such shifts. When companies focus on changing habits, whole organizations can transform. Firms such as Procter & Gamble, Starbucks, Alcoa, and Target

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

By focusing on one pattern—what is known as a keystone habit—Lisa had taught herself how to reprogram the other routines in her life, as well. It's not

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

A five-year-old who can follow the ball for ten minutes becomes a sixth grader who can start his homework on time.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The more you focus, the more that focus becomes a habit.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Every habit is made of three parts... a cue, a routine and a habit. Most people focus on the routine and behavior, but these cues and rewards are really the way you make something into a habit.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

What studies say the number one best way to start an exercise habit is to give yourself a reward that you genuinely enjoy.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Often in companies, you'll see tensions between sales and marketing. Sales people will want to give discounts to clients because they often get paid a commission based on how much they sell. So they're always pushing to give discounts because that will increase sales. Marketing, however, is judged by overall profitability.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Stock exchanges say that more than half of all trades are now executed by just a handful of high-frequency traders, who use rapid-fire computers to essentially force slower investors to give up profits, then disappear before anyone knows what happened.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

In a flash order transaction, buy or sell orders are shown to a collection of high-frequency traders for just 30 milliseconds before they are routed to everyone else. They are widely considered to give the few investors with access to the technology an unfair advantage, even by some of the marketplaces that offer the flash orders for a fee.

We know there are certain chemicals that are designed to give us a rush of pleasure. But, one of the most amazing things about being human is our capacity to override that pleasure. To either say, 'I don't need that pleasure right now. I'm going to ignore the craving.' Or to find something else that we find a deeper sense of reward from.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Our brain is essentially programmed to enjoy carbohydrates because they give us a sense of fullness and a rush of pleasure. When people go on low-carb diets, they start to almost subconsciously experience distress from eating carbohydrates.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

A movement starts because of the social habits of friendship and the strong ties between close acquaintances. It grows because of the habits of a community, and the weak ties that hold neighborhoods and clans together. And it endures because a movement's leaders give participants new habits that create a fresh sense of identity and a feeling of ownership.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The secret to making that happen, he says, is giving everyone a voice and finding people willing to be sensitive enough to listen to one another

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Because there's no craving that has made sunscreen into a daily habit. Some companies are trying to fix that by giving sunscreens a tingling sensation or something that lets people know they've applied it to their skin.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

When people come together in a group, sometimes we need to give control to others. That's ultimately what team norms are: individuals willingly giving a measure of control to their teammates. But that works only when people feel like they can trust one another. It only succeeds when we feel psychologically safe.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

For an idea to grow beyond a community, it must become self-propelling. And the surest way to achieve that is to give people new habits that help them figure out where to go on their own.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

That's how our mind learns and remembers how good it feels to be in control. And unless we practice self-determination and give ourselves emotional rewards for subversive assertiveness, our capacity for self-motivation can fade.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Motivation becomes easier when we transform a chore into a choice. Doing so gives us a sense of control.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Even if you give people better habits, it doesn't repair why they started drinking in the first place. Eventually they'll have a bad day, and no new routine is going to make everything seem okay. What can make a difference is believing that they can cope with that stress without alcohol.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Understanding the cues and cravings driving your habits won't make them suddenly disappear—but it will give you a way to plan how to change the pattern.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Self-discipline has a bigger effect on academic performance than does intellectual talent.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

What we know from lab studies is that it's never too late to break a habit. Habits are malleable throughout your entire life. But we also know that the best way to change a habit is to understand its structure - that once you tell people about the cue and the reward and you force them to recognize what those factors are in a behavior, it becomes much, much easier to change.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Habits are malleable throughout your entire life.

Hiding what you know is sometimes as important as knowing it.

It's easy to forget, given her scandal-tinged life and tragic death, how incredibly talented Whitney Houston was. She holds the world record as the most-awarded female act of all time, with over 415 major recognitions during her career. She is the only artist to chart seven consecutive number one songs.

A huge amount of success in life comes from learning as a child how to make good habits. It's good to help kids understand that when they do certain things habitually, they're reinforcing patterns.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

And what's the biggest life event for most people? What causes the greatest disruption and vulnerability to marketing interventions? Having a baby. There's almost no greater upheaval for most customers than the arrival of a child. As a result, new parents' habits are more flexible at that moment than at almost any other period in an adult's life.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

you have to be comfortable not knowing exactly where life is going. That's how I've learned to keep the anxiety away.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

We can develop this intuition by studying statistics, playing games like poker, thinking through life's potential pitfalls and successes, or helping our kids work through their anxieties by writing them down and patiently calculating the odds.

Charles Duhigg

Narrate your life, as you are living it, and you'll encode those experiences deeper in your brain.

@cduhigg

For most people who overhaul their lives, there are no seminal moments or life-altering disasters.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Researchers began finding that habit replacement worked pretty well for many people until the stresses of life—such as finding out your mom has cancer, or your marriage is coming apart—got too high, at which point alcoholics often fell off the wagon.

People who know how to self-motivate, according to studies, earn more money than their peers, report higher levels of happiness, and see they are more satisfied with their families, jobs, and lives.

Charles Duhigg

When people believe they are in control, they tend to work harder and push themselves more.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Motivation is triggered by making choices that demonstrate to ourselves that we are in control.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Internal locus of control has been linked with academic success, higher self-motivation and social maturity, lower incidences of stress and depression, and longer life span, a team of psychologists wrote in the journal Problems and Perspectives in Management in 2012.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

We praise people for doing things that are hard. That's how they learn to believe they can do them.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

If you can link something hard to a choice you care about, it makes the task easier.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

To teach ourselves to self-motivate more easily, we need to learn to see our choices not just as expressions of control but also as affirmations of our values and goals.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

These small acts of defiance were, in the grand scheme of things, relatively minor. But they are psychologically powerful because the subversives saw the rebellions as evidence that they were still in control of their own lives.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

The choices that are most powerful in generating motivation are decisions that do two things: They convince us we're in control and they endow our actions with larger meaning.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

We should reward initiative, congratulate people for self-motivation, celebrate when an infant wants to feed herself. We should applaud a child who shows defiant, self-righteous stubbornness and reward a student who finds a way to get things done by working around the rules.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Self-motivation is a choice we make because it is part of something bigger and more emotionally rewarding than the immediate task that needs doing.

Saturday Night Live has been held up as a model of great team dynamics. It is cited in college textbooks as an example of what groups can achieve when the right conditions are in place and a team intensely bonds. The group that created Saturday Night Live came together so successfully, this theory goes, because a communal culture replaced individual needs.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

For psychological safety to emerge among a group, teammates don't have to be friends. They do, however, need to be socially sensitive and ensure everyone feels heard.

Charles Duhigg

Teams success when everyone feels like they can speak up and when members show they are sensitive to how one another feels.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

People who know how to manage their attention and who habitually build robust mental models tend to earn more money and get better grades. Moreover, experience shows that anyone can learn to habitually construct mental models. By developing a habit of telling ourselves stories about what's going on around us, we learn to sharpen where our attention goes.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Narrate your life as it's occurring, and then when your boss suddenly asks a question or an urgent note arrives and you have only minutes to reply, the spotlight in your head will be ready to shine the right way.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

To become genuinely productive, we must take control of our attention, we must build mental models that put us firmly in charge. When you're driving to work, force yourself to envision your day. While you're sitting in a meeting or at lunch, describe to yourself what you're seeing and what it means. Find other people to hear your theories and challenge them. Get in a pattern of forcing yourself to anticipate what's next.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Numerous academic studies have examined the impact of stretch goals, and have consistently found that forcing people to commit to ambitious, seemingly out-of-reach objectives can spark outsized jumps in innovation and productivity.

Charles Duhigg
@cduhigg

Stretch goals, paired with SMART thinking, can help put the impossible within reach.

Charles Duhigg

Choose to be optimistic, it feels better.

Dalai Lama

True change is within; leave the outside as it is.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

To be kind, honest and have positive thoughts; to forgive those who harm us and treat everyone as a friend; to help those who are suffering and never to consider ourselves superior to anyone else: even if this advice seems rather simplistic, make the effort of seeing whether by following it you can find greater happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Even if only a few individuals try to create mental peace and happiness within themselves, and act responsibly and kind-heartedly towards others, they will have a positive influence in their community.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The way to change others' minds is with affection, and not anger.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The ultimate source of my mental happiness is my peace of mind. Nothing can destroy this except my own anger.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

There is only one important point you must keep in your mind and let it be your guide. No matter what people call you, you are just who you are. Keep to this truth. You must ask yourself how is it you want to live your life. We live and we die, this is the truth that we can only face alone. No one can help us, not even the Buddha. So consider carefully, what prevents you from living the way you want to live your life?

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

We must each lead a way of life with self-awareness and compassion, to do as much as we can. Then, whatever happens we will have no regrets.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Since periods of great change, such as the present one, come so rarely in human history, it is up to each of us to make the best use of our time to help create a happier world.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The whole purpose of religion is to facilitate love and compassion, patience, tolerance, humility, and forgiveness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you have a particular faith or religion, that is good. But you can survive without it.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The purpose of all the major religious traditions is not to construct big temples on the outside, but to create temples of goodness and compassion inside, in our hearts.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If scientific analysis were conclusively to demonstrate certain claims in Buddhism to be false, then we must accept the findings of science and abandon those claims.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

For those who may not find happiness to exercise religious faith, it's okay to remain a radical atheist; it's absolutely an individual right, but the important thing is with a compassionate heart - then no problem.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The very purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticize others. Rather, we must criticize ourselves. How much am I doing about my anger? About my attachment, about my hatred, about my pride, my jealousy? These are the things which we must check in daily life.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I have come to the conclusion that whether or not a person is a religious believer does not matter. Far more important is that they be a good human being.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I really feel that some people neglect and overlook compassion because they associate it with religion. Of course, everyone is free to choose whether they pay religion any regard, but to neglect compassion is a mistake because it is the source of our own well-being.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I always tell people that religious institutions and political institutions should be separate. So while I'm telling people this, I myself continue with them combined. Hypocrisy!

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Buddhism does not accept a theory of God, or a creator. According to Buddhism, one's own actions are the creator, ultimately. Some people say that, from a certain angle, Buddhism is not a religion but rather a science of mind.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I believe that whether a person follows any religion or not is unimportant, he or she must have a good heart, a warm heart.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

All religion teaches the virtues of love, altruism and patience, while showing us how to discipline and transform ourselves to achieve inner peace and a kind heart. Therefore, they are worthy of our respect.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Religion is important for humanity, but it should evolve with humanity. The first priority is to establish and develop the principle of pluralism in all religious traditions. If we, the religious leaders, cultivate a sincere pluralistic attitude, then everything will be more simple. It is good that most religious leaders are at least beginning to recognize other traditions, even though they may not approve of them. The next step is to accept that the idea of propagating religion is outdated. It no longer suits the times.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Religion does not mean just precepts, a temple, monastery, or other external signs, for these as well as hearing and thinking are subsidiary factors in taming the mind.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

There is no denying that consideration of others is worthwhile and that our happiness is inextricably bound up with the happiness of others. There is no denying that if society suffers, we ourselves suffer, and the more our hearts and minds are afflicted with ill-will, the more miserable we become. We can reject religion, ideology, and receive wisdom, but we cannot escape the need for love and compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

We cannot hope to die peacefully if our lives have been full of violence, or if our minds have mostly been agitated by emotions like anger, attachment, or fear. So if we wish to die well, we must learn how to live well: Hoping for a peaceful death, we must cultivate peace in our mind, and in our way of life.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

We must conduct research and then accept the results. If they don't stand up to experimentation, Buddha's own words must be rejected.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Ageing destroys youth, sickness destroys health, degeneration of life destroys all excellent qualities and death destroys life. Even if you are a great runner, you cannot run away from death. you cannot stop death with your wealth, through your magic performances or recitation of mantras or even medicines. Therefore, it is wise to prepare for your death.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

As a Buddhist, I view death as a normal process, a reality that I accept will occur as long as I remain in this earthly existence. Knowing that I cannot escape it, I see no point in worrying about it. I tend to think of death as being like changing your clothes when they are old and worn out, rather than as some final end. Yet death is unpredictable: We do not know when or how it will take place. So it is only sensible to take certain precautions before it actually happens.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

There is no way to escape death, it is just like trying to escape by four great mountains touching the sky. There is no escape from these four mountains of birth, old age, sickness and death.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

From a Buddhist point of view, the actual experience of death is very important. Although how or where we will be reborn is generally dependent on karmic forces, our state of mind at the time of death can influence the quality of our next rebirth. So at the moment of death, in spite of the great variety of karmas we have accumulated, if we make a special effort to generate a virtuous state of mind, we may strengthen and activate a virtuous karma, and so bring about a happy rebirth.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you are mindful of death, it will not come as a surprise-you will not be anxious. You will feel that death is merely like changing clothes. Consequently, at that point you will be able to maintain your calmness of mind.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The process of dying begins with the dissolution of the elements within the body. It has eight stages, beginning with the dissolution of the earth element, then the water, fire and wind elements. The color: appearance of a white vision, increase of the red element, black near-attainment, and finally the clear light of death.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I hold the view that death is rather like changing one's clothes when they are torn and old. It is not an end in itself. Yet death is unpredictable-you do not know when and howT it will take place.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

To my mind, there are two things that, in life, you can do about death. Either you can choose to ignore it, in which case you may have some success in making the idea of it go away for a limited period of time, or you can confront the prospect of your own death and try to analyze it and, in so doing, try to minimize some of the inevitable suffering that it causes. Neither way can you actually overcome it.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human, but also human to other forms of life.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just a mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

One of the basic points is kindness. With kindness, with love and compassion, with his feeling that is the essence of brotherhood, sisterhood, one will have inner peace. This compassionate feeling is the basis of inner peace.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you wish to experience peace, provide peace for another.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Peace does not mean an absence of conflicts; differences will always be there. Peace means solving these differences through peaceful means; through dialogue, education, knowledge; and through humane ways.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

There needs to be understanding that anger never helps to solve a problem. It destroys our peace of mind and blinds our ability to think clearly. Anger and attachment are emotions that distort our view of reality.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The real destroyer of inner peace is fear and distrust. Fear develops frustration, frustration develops anger, anger develops violence.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of inner peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion and elimination of ignorance, selfishness and greed.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Without inner peace it is impossible to have world peace.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The problems we face today, violent conflicts, destruction of nature, poverty, hunger, and so on, are human-created problems which can be resolved through human effort, understanding and the development of a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. We need to cultivate a universal responsibility for one another and the planet we share.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Peace starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The question of world peace, the question of family peace, the question of peace between wife and husband, or peace between parents and children, everything is dependent on that feeling of love and warmheartedness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

All forms of violence, especially war, are totally unacceptable as means to settle disputes between and among nations, groups and persons.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us. When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighboring communities.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Brute force, no matter how strongly applied, can never subdue the basic human desire for freedom.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Just as we take for granted the need to acquire proficiency in the basic academic subjects, I am hopeful that a time will come when we can take it for granted that children will learn, as part of the curriculum, the indispensability of inner values: love, compassion, justice, and forgiveness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Every morning when I wake up, I dedicate myself to helping others to find peace of mind. Then, when I meet people, I think of them as long term friends; I don't regard others as strangers.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where the people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

It is a question of our own peace and mental stability.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I am a steadfast follower of the doctrine of non-violence which was first preached by Lord Buddha, whose divine wisdom is absolute.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Without changing one's self, without peace in one's self, world peace is not possible.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The future will be in the hands of those of you who belong to the 21st century. You have the opportunity and responsibility to build a better humanity. This means developing warm-heartedness in this very life, here and now. So, do whatever work you do, but ask yourselves now and then, 'How can I contribute to human beings being happier and more peaceful?'

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

We must recognize that the suffering of one person or one nation is the suffering of humanity.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

It's unrealistic to think that the future of humanity can be achieved only on the basis of prayer; what we need is to take action.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If we can cultivate a concern for others, keeping in mind the oneness of humanity, we can build a more compassionate world.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Giving up attachment to the world does not mean that you set yourself apart from it. Generating a desire for others to be happy increases your humanity. As you become less attached to the world, you become more humane. As the very purpose of spiritual practice is to help others, you must remain in society.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Love and kindness are the very basis of society. If we lose these feelings, society will face tremendous difficulties; the survival of humanity will be endangered.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion can be put into practice if one recognizes the fact that every human being is a member of humanity and the human family regardless of differences in religion, culture, color and creed. Deep down there is no difference.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

‎In today's materialistic world there is a risk of people becoming slaves to money, as though they were simply cogs in a huge money-making machine. This does nothing for human dignity, freedom, and genuine well-being. Wealth should serve humanity, and not the other way around.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If our tears do not lead us to act then we have lost the reason for our humanity, which is compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Each one of us is responsible for the whole of humankind. We need to think of each other really as brothers and sisters and to be concerned for each other's welfare. Rather than working solely to acquire wealth, we need to do something meaningful, something directed seriously towards the welfare of humanity as a whole.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I appreciate any organization or individual people who sincerely make an effort to promote harmony between humanity, and particularly harmony between the various religions. I consider it very sacred work and very important work

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Concern yourselves more with the needs of others, with the needs of all humanity, and you'll have peace of mind.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If each of us can learn to relate to each other more out of compassion, with a sense of connection to each other and a deep recognition of our common humanity, and more important, to teach this to our children, I believe that this can go a long way in reducing many of the conflicts and problems that we see today.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

All beings come from a mother's womb. We should have a clear realization of the oneness of all humanity.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The many factors which divide us are actually much more superficial than those we share. Despite all of the things that differentiate us - race, language, religion, gender, wealth and so on - we are all equal concerning our fundamental humanity.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Without technology humanity has no future, but we have to be careful that we don't become so mechanised that we lose our human feelings.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Today we understand that the future of humanity very much depends on our planet, and that the future of the planet very much depends on humanity.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

World belongs to humanity, not this leader, that leader or that king or prince or religious leader. World belongs to humanity.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you focus only on yourself and neglect others, you will lose; but you will gain if you value others as much as you cherish yourself.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

My message is the practice of compassion, love and kindness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The practicing of loving kindness toward one's enemy is the ultimate test of one's own spiritual attainment.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The key point is kindness. With kindness one will have inner peace. Through inner peace, world peace can one day be a reality.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Kindness and a good heart are the foundation for success in this life, progress on the spiritual path, and the fulfillment of our aspirations. Our need for them is not limited to any specific time, place, society, or culture.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Don't ever mistake my silence for ignorance, my calmness for acceptance or my kindness for weakness. Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

More fundamental than religion is our basic human spirituality. We have a basic human disposition towards love, kindness and affection, irrespective of whether we have a religious framework or not. When we nurture this most basic human resource - when we set about cultivating those basic inner values which we all appreciate in others, then we start to live spiritually.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Mentally, physically and emotionally we are the same.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

We each have the potential to be good and bad and to be overcome by disturbing emotions such as anger, fear, hatred, suspicion and greed. These emotions can be the cause of many problems.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

On the other hand if you cultivate loving kindness, compassion and concern for others, there will be no room for anger, hatred and jealousy.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn't anyone who doesn't appreciate kindness and compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Generosity is the most natural outward expression of an inner attitude of compassion and loving-kindness .

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Our visit to this planet is short, so we should use our time meaningfully, which we can do by helping others wherever possible. And if we cannot help others, at least we should try not to create pain and suffering for them.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

My Brain and My Heart are my Temples. My true Religion is Kindness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Whether or not we follow any particular spiritual tradition, the benefits of love and kindness are obvious to anyone.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The purpose of our life needs to be positive. We weren't born with the purpose of causing trouble, harming others. For our life to be of value, I think we must develop basic good human qualities - warmth, kindness, compassion. Then our life becomes meaningful and more peaceful - happier.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I feel that the essence of spiritual practice is your attitude toward others. When you have a pure, sincere motivation, then you have the right attitude toward others based on kindness, compassion, love and respect.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

In daily practice, reflect on the benefits of love, compassion and kindness, then reflect on the disadvantages of anger. Such continuous contemplation, the growing appreciation of love, has the effect of reducing our inclination towards hatred and increasing our respect for love. By this means even anger can be diminished.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The essence of all religions is love, compassion and tolerance. Kindness is my true religion. No matter whether you are learned or not, whether you believe in the next life or not, whether you believe in God or Buddha or some other religion or not, in day-to-day life you must be a kind person.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Women have the capacity to lead us to a more peaceful world with compassion, affection, and kindness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Love and compassion benefit both ourselves and others. Through kindness to others, your heart and mind will be peaceful and open.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Live a good, honourable life. Then when you get older and look back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Our business is to be happy.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Happiness can be achieved through training the mind.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Happiness arises as a result of different causes and conditions. If you harm someone out of anger, you may feel some superficial satisfaction, but deep down you know it was wrong. Your confidence will be undermined. However, if you have an altruistic attitude, you'll feel comfortable and confident in the presence of others.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called Yesterday and the other is called Tomorrow. Today is the right day to Love, Believe, Do and mostly Live.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The purpose of our lives is to be happy.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Happiness mainly comes from our own attitude, rather than from external factors.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The key to human happiness lies within our own state of mind, and so too do the primary obstacles to that happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

It is our basic right to be a happy person, happy family, and eventually a happy world. That should be our goal.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I believe compassion to be one of the few things we can practice that will bring immediate and long-term happiness to our lives.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

A heart full of love and compassion is the main source of inner strength, willpower, happiness, and mental tranquility.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Only the development of compassion and understanding for others can bring us the tranquility and happiness we all seek.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The more we think of others, the happier we are. The more we think of ourselves, the more suffering we feel.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If we have no inner peace, we deceive ourselves into thinking that comfort and prosperity will bring happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

When I meet people from other cultures I know that they too want happiness and do not want suffering, this allows me to see them as brothers and sisters.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

A sense of concern for others gives our lives meaning; it is the root of all human happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Genuine happiness consists in those spiritual qualities of love, compassion, patience, tolerance and forgiveness and so on. For it is these which provide both for our happiness and others happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Happiness is a state of mind. With physical comforts if your mind is still in a state of confusion and agitation, it is not happiness. Happiness means calmness of mind.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

There are two kinds of satisfaction or happiness: one mainly through mental peace; another physical comfort.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The challenge today is to convince people of the value of truth, honesty, compassion and a concern for others.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you don't love yourself, you cannot love others. You will not be able to love others. If you have no compassion for yourself then you are not able to develop compassion for others.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Through violence, you may 'solve' one problem, but you sow the seeds for another.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Anger cannot be overcome by anger. If someone is angry with you, and you show anger in return, the result is a disaster. On the other hand, if you control your anger and show its opposite - love, compassion, tolerance and patience - not only will you remain peaceful, but the other person's anger will also diminish.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion is something we can count on. Even if we face economic problems and our fortunes decline, we can still share our compassion with our fellow human beings. National and global economies are subject to many ups and downs, but through them all we can retain a compassionate attitude that will carry us through.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Every single being, even those who are hostile to us, is just as afraid of suffering as we are, and seeks happiness in the same way we do. Every person has the same right as we do to be happy and not to suffer. So let's take care of others wholeheartedly, of both our friends and our enemies. This is the basis for true compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I try to treat whoever I meet as an old friend. This gives me a genuine feeling of happiness. It is the practice of compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

You must not hate those who do wrong or harmful things; but with compassion, you must do what you can to stop them — for they are harming themselves, as well as those who suffer from their actions.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

It seems that for some people the idea of compassion entails a complete disregard for or even a sacrifice of their own interests. This is not the case. In fact, you first of all have to have a wish to be happy yourself - if you don't love yourself like that, how can you love others?

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion is not religious business, it is human business, it is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability, it is essential for human survival.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion automatically brings happiness and calmness. Then, even if you receive disturbing news, it will be easier to take, as your mind is still.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The creatures that inhabit this earth-be they human beings or animals-are here to contribute, each in its own particular way, to the beauty and prosperity of the world.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion is the wish to see others free from suffering.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

When we are motivated by compassion and wisdom, the results of our actions benefit everyone, not just our individual selves or some immediate convenience. When we are able to recognize and forgive ignorant actions of the past, we gain strength to constructively solve the problems of the present.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

A truly compassionate attitude toward others does not change even if they behave negatively or hurt you.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I think technology really increased human ability, but technology cannot produce compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion and love give meaning to our activities and make them constructive.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion is the radicalism of our time.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Compassion is the wish for another being to be free from suffering; love is wanting them to have happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Material progress and a higher standard of living bring us greater comfort and health, but do not lead to a transformation of the mind, which is the only thing capable of providing lasting peace. Profound happiness, unlike fleeting pleasures, is spiritual in nature. It depends on the happiness of others and it is based on love and affection.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Some people consider the practice of love and compassion is only related to religious practice and if they are not interested in religion they neglect these inner values. But love and compassion are qualities that human beings require just to live together.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The more you are motivated by Love, The more Fearless & Free your action will be.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

‎Interdependence is a fundamental law of nature. Even tiny insects survive by mutual cooperation based on innate recognition of their interconnectedness. It is because our own human existence is so dependent on the help of others that our need for love lies at the very foundation of our existence. Therefore we need a genuine sense of responsibility and a sincere concern for the welfare of others.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Real love is not based on attachment, but on altruism. In this case, your compassion will remain as a humane response to suffering as long as beings continue to suffer.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

One can overcome the forces of negative emotions, like anger and hatred, by cultivating their counter-forces, like love and compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

There should be a balance between material and spiritual progress, a balance achieved through the principles based on love and compassion.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Love is a simple practice yet it is very beneficial for the individual who practices it as well as for the community in which he lives, for the nation, and for the whole world.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Our love could change the orbit of the earth. So, if a meteor ever comes hurtling towards earth with the guarantee of destruction, top scientists may call on us to, well, you know, do it like crazy for the sake of humankind.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

The point of life is happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Give the ones you love wings to fly, roots to come back and reasons to stay.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it's not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you can cultivate the right attitude, your enemies are your best spiritual teachers because their presence provides you with the opportunity to enhance and develop tolerance, patience and understanding.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Because we all share this planet earth, we have to learn to live in harmony and peace with each other and with nature. This is not just a dream, but a necessity.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If there is love, there is hope that one may have real families, real brotherhood, real equanimity, real peace. If the love within your mind is lost and you see other beings as enemies, then no matter how much knowledge or education or material comfort you have, only suffering and confusion will ensue.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

What is the meaning of life? To be happy and useful.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion, we all are seeking something better in life. So, I think, the very motion of our life is towards happiness.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively.

Dalai Lama
@DalaiLama

If you have fear of some pain or suffering, you should examine whether there is anything you can do about it. If you can, there is no need to worry about it; if you cannot do anything, then there is also no need to worry.

Our mission statement about treating people with respect and dignity is not just words but a creed we live by every day. You can't expect your employees to exceed the expectations of your customers if you don't exceed the employees' expectations of management. That's the contract.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

It's different when you're trying to turn something around, especially something that you built, at a time when so many constituents - the media, Wall Street, competitors, ex-employees - are all saying that Starbucks's best days are behind it, and that Schultz is never going to be able to bring it back.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

On balance, I am a supporter of the minimum wage going up. We've got to be very careful what we wish for because some employers - and there could be a lot of them - will be scared away from hiring new people or creating incremental hours for part-time people as a result of that wage going up.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

We will never-and I mean never-turn our backs on our employees.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

It's ironic that retailers and restaurants live or die on customer service, yet their employees have some of the lowest pay and worst benefits of any industry. That's one reason so many retail experiences are mediocre for the public.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks is not an advertiser; people think we are a great marketing company, but in fact we spend very little money on marketing and more money on training our people than advertising.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

While we are a coffee company at heart, Starbucks provides much more than the best cup of coffee—we offer a community gathering place where people come together to connect and discover new things.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I think Starbucks created a platform and, ultimately, a runway for many other companies to emulate. I suspect if we had not achieved what we have, there would have been many regional brands that would have succeeded. But I'm not sure there would have been a national brand of the scope of Starbucks.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

For Starbucks, there will be no shortage of the highest-quality arabica beans. I suspect that for some others there could potentially be a problem, not in the near term, but over time.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

People have come to me over the years and said to me: 'I admire the culture of Starbucks. Can you come give a speech and help us turn our culture around?' I wish it were that easy. Turning a culture around is very difficult to do because it's based on a series of many, many decisions, and the organization is framed by those decisions.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

We sell tea in Starbucks, but I think the experience is very different. I think coffee is something that is quick - it's transactional. I think tea is more Zen-like. It requires a different environment.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

London, a city where creativity and innovation have always flourished, provides a significant home for Starbucks and a significant gateway into Europe.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Despite the fact that Starbucks has grown to be a large company. We've always played music in our stores and has always acted as an opportunity to create a mood in our stores. And customers started asking, What song are you playing and can I buy that? . And we said No. And that was kind of the catalyst for beginning to look at music. We started out with our own compilations and after the success of that. We had the courage to say, Let's produce our own record. and the first record was with Ray Charles before he unfortunately passed away.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks being an extension of peoples home and work. The sense of community, human connection. That appears to be as relevant in Turkey, China, Japan and Spain as it is here in America. And Starbucks I think is creating something for people all over the world that has not existed before.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks has stores in America in many, many communities that are governed by many, many different municipalities. Starbucks cannot dictate to a municipality in Cincinnati or Kansas City or Sacramento how or why or when there should be a recycling program.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

If Vancouver did not succeed as Starbucks from '87 on, our entire international business, which is now thousands of stores and a significant amount of growth and profit, may not have existed.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks represents something beyond a cup of coffee.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

More than anything else, technology will pave the way for innovative change at Starbucks. The bulk of Starbucks' innovation over the next several years will be technology-focused.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Do I take criticism of Starbucks personally? Of course I do.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

With a population of more than 600 million people, an emerging middle class that is driving strong consumption, and a robust and resilient economy, Southeast Asia presents a compelling growth opportunity for Starbucks.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

When I first discovered in the early 1980s the Italian espresso bars in my trip to Italy, the vision was to recreate that for America - a third place that had not existed before. Starbucks recreated that in America in our own image; a place to go other than home or work. We also created an industry that did not exist: specialty coffee.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I think people will walk into the Starbucks store and overnight recognize the significant difference between what Starbucks represents day-in and day-out and all the other coffee companies that have been serving coffee in India for so many years.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I could've just walked away but I never could have forgiven myself to allow Starbucks to drift into mediocrity or not be relevant. I just couldn't be a bystander.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks is in my blood. It is such a part of me that letting it unravel simply was not an option.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks has changed the rules of engagement for the music industry.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Our history is based on extending the brand to categories within the guardrails of Starbucks.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

When it comes to Starbucks, I take every threat very personally.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

We need to reinvent food at Starbucks. Less could be more.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks trying to build a different kind of company around the balance of profitably and benevolence. A social conscience. And that isn't a program it has to be a way of life.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

At Starbucks 0 as in any business, in any life - there are so many hectic moments during the day when we are simply trying to do the job, trying to put out the fires, trying to solve any number of small problems, that we often lose sight of what it is we're really here to do.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

California, in a sense, is almost Starbucks' largest country, with almost 3,000 stores.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

The response to the Starbucks brand has been phenomenal in our international markets.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

When we began Starbucks, what I wanted to try to do was to create a set of values, guiding principles, and culture.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

When I returned as CEO in 2008, Starbucks had forgotten that meaningful innovations balance an organization's heritage with modern-day relevance and market differentiation, so we had to reorient. In one brainstorming session, we visited and observed great retailers, then asked ourselves, 'If Starbucks did not exist, what type of coffee experience would we create?

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Overnight the digital age had changed the course of history for our company. Everything that we thought was in our control no longer was. But within a year we had invested in social media and digital experts. Now Starbucks is the number one brand on Facebook.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

We woke up one day, and all the sudden Starbucks was in the middle of this political crossfire between the people who want to bring a gun into Starbucks and the people who want to prevent it. It is a very difficult, fragile situation.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I honestly never dreamed at the time that I would one day own the Starbucks and or be in a position where we would have more than 10,000 stores around the world. It has just been an incredible journey for all of us.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

People around the world, they want the authentic Starbucks experience.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks has a role and a meaningful relationship with people that is not only about the coffee.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

We are not in the coffee business serving people, we are in the people business serving coffee.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I think we are living in a time where the consumer has lots of choices, whether it's coffee, newspapers or whatever it is. And there is parity in the market place and as a result of that the consumer is beginning to make decisions, not just on what things cost and the convenience of it.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

China traditionally has been a tea-drinking country but we turned them into coffee drinkers.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

We would take something old and tired and common - coffee - and weave a sense of romance and community around it. We would rediscover the mystique and charm that had swirled around coffee throughout the centuries.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I was taken by the power that savoring a simple cup of coffee can have to connect people and create community.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

The premium single-cup segment is the fastest-growing business within the global coffee industry.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I can't imagine a day without coffee. I can't imagine!

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

In many places where coffee is grown, deforestation is a major issue. With Starbucks' position in the marketplace and the respect and relationships we have, we can - and have, in some cases - been able to educate and influence people.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

The growth of the company and the license that Starbucks has is to participate in other food and beverage opportunities. We have a global business... and in many parts of the world, tea is much, much bigger than coffee, and we're going to bring tea and bring our capability and our understanding of what we've done for coffee to tea.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Starbucks is rekindling America's love affair with coffee, bringing romance and fresh flavor back to the brew.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

There's this myth that has been exacerbated by others that Starbucks means a $4 cup of coffee, which is not true.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Don't buy preground coffee.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

We think of Starbucks not as a coffee company but a media company.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

My kids probably started drinking coffee in their late teens.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

Certainly the caffeine in coffee, whether it's Starbucks or generic coffee, is somewhat of a stimulant. But if you drink it in moderation, which I think four or five cups a day is, you're fine.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

If you look at coffee, tea, food and juice, we think there are inherent opportunities. If you look at health bars or grab-and-go products that are in our stores, we think we can significantly enhance them and make them more widely available.

Howard Schultz
@HowardSchultz

I probably have about four or five cups of coffee a day. I make myself an espresso macchiato when I wake, which is a shot of espresso and just a dollop of steamed milk. Then, if I'm going to do some work at home, I would make myself a French press. It's the best way to make conventional coffee.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Watch out for the joy-stealers: gossip, criticism, complaining, fault finding, and a negative, judgmental attitude.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Set your mind that no matter what is going on in your life, you will have a good attitude.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Encourage everyone you meet with a smile or compliment. Make them feel better when you leave their presence and they will always be glad to see you coming.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

A positive attitude gives you power over your circumstances instead of your circumstances having power over you.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

We often think more highly of ourselves than we ought to, and it's easy to judge others and be critical of their weaknesses and shortcomings. But this self-righteous attitude is a sin that we can be blinded to because we're so focused on what the other person did wrong. The reality is this attitude is worse than the wrong behavior we're judging.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Anytime we step out boldly to make changes, we take a chance that we might fail. But the only way to get better is to try.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

We are not a failure just because we fail at something. Nobody is a failure unless they quit trying!

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Individuals need to be willing to face the truth about their attitudes, behaviors, even what we want out of life.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

The source of our stress isn't really difficulties, circumstances and situations-it's our attitude and approach toward them.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Is your problem really your problem, or is it your attitude towards the problem that's your problem?

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Faith is having a positive attitude about what you can do and not worrying at all about what you can't do.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I believe that a trusting attitude and a patient attitude go hand in hand. You see, when you let go and learn to trust God, it releases joy in your life. And when you trust God, you're able to be more patient. Patience is not just about waiting for something... it's about how you wait, or your attitude while waiting.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

As long as we complain, we remain stuck in our problems. But a thankful attitude brings deliverance and makes God smile.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Don't let someone who has a bad attitude give it to you.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

You can look at a person's attitude and know what kind of thinking is prevalent in his life... It's better to be positive and wrong than negative and right!

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

The great thing about an attitude is that it's yours and you can change it.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Patience is not just about waiting for something... it's about how you wait, or your attitude while waiting.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Refuse to be a lazy Christian, and resist a passive, apathetic attitude.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Death is not the opposite of life, it is a part of life. A part we've not yet explored and thus do not understand and it is only natural to fear what we do not understand. But with the right attitude we can make life beautiful. With this same attitude, can death not be the same? We almost always see only what's wrong with other people and not what's wrong with us.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I'm only going to stand before God and give an account for my life, not for somebody else's life. If I have a bad attitude, then I need to say there's no point in me blaming you for what's wrong in my life.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I want to look my best for God. So many people have the attitude that if you're a Christian you've got to dress bad, wear an old color, not do anything to your hair, have nothing. It's no wonder that Christianity is not very attractive. I mean, how many people do you know in a Western culture that's going to go, 'Yeah, give me some of that?'

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Choosing an attitude of faith will release peace out of your spirit and into your soul.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Reproach is shame, blame, disgrace, disapproval and a disrespectful attitude toward yourself. When you're under reproach, your behavior shows it.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Attitude is an inward thought that wiggles its way out.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

One might say that our words are a movie screen that reveals what we have been thinking and the attitudes we have.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Hope is a favorable and confident expectation; it's an expectant attitude that something good is going to happen and things will work out, no matter what situation we're facing.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Enjoyment of life is not based on enjoyable circumstances. It is an attitude of the heart, a decision to enjoy everything because everything - even little, seemingly insignificant things - have a part in the overall big picture of life.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

If someone you know makes a bad decision or uses bad judgment, it doesn't mean you have to allow that to alter your attitude. Why should you allow anyone else's bad decisions to send you into a tailspin of misery?

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Attitude is your thought life turned inside out.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Contentment with life is not a feeling, but it is a decision we must make. Contentment does not mean that we never want to see change or improvement, but it does mean we can be happy where we are and will do the best we can with what we have. It also means we will maintain an attitude that allows us to enjoy the gift of life.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Stop giving someone else the job of making you happy.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

If selfishness is the key to being miserable, then selflessness must be the key to being happy!

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Make happiness a habit. Be so happy you drive the devil stark-raving mad.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

So often, we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down in here. I'm not happy. I don't know what's wrong. If I just had another job, I could be happy. If I just get married, I would be happy. Well if I just wasn't married, I would be happy. Well, if I just had some kids, I'll be happy. I'll be happy when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. If I had a bigger house, I would be happy. Well, I got a big house. Now if I just had a maid to clean, I'd be happy. Well, now if I just had a maid I could get along with better, I'd be happy.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Without joy in your life you are powerless.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

The one thing everybody's looking for is unconditional love. We all need somebody to love us just the way we are.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

You may think that if someone else doesn't change, you can never be happy. But if you change, you can be happy no matter what.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Victory is not the absence of problems, it is the presence of power.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Don't build walls and shut people out of your life. To act as if another does not exist is a mean and cruel weapon.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

If you are facing a new challenge or being asked to do something that you have never done before don't be afraid to step out. You have more capability than you think you do but you will never see it unless you place a demand on yourself for more.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Teachers can change lives with just the right mix of chalk and challenges.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

God has created us to be dependent upon Him, to bring Him our challenges and allow Him to help us with them.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

If you refuse to be happy until you have no problems or challenges, you will probably never be happy!

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Happiness is not a feeling, it is a choice. To be happy, one must choose to be happy, not respond to a circumstance that now controls your happiness.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Your joy comes from how you think, the choices that we make in life.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Most of us have hoped and prayed for something to happen a certain way, but it didn't. And when this happened, we had a choice to make: to react with offense toward God or to trust Him anyway.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I believe that a lot of people in our society today, people who have been hurt and even people who haven't been hurt, get their worth and value from what they do, what they look like, what they own, what kind of job they have, what kind of house they live in, how much money they have, what social circles they're in, what level of education they have, especially even how other people respond to them. They feel better about themselves if everybody is giving a smiling nod to the way they look and all their choices.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Wisdom is exercised in the choices you make.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

As a global society, we do not have to agree, endorse or condone the lifestyle choices of others. However, history has taught us that we equally cannot and should not excuse those who would hide behind religion or misuse God's word to justify bigotry and persecution.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

God is a good choice to lean on. He has a proven record of faithfulness to those who commit their lives to Him.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Forgiveness is manifested mercy; it is live in action - not love based on a feeling, but love based on a decision, an intentional choice to obey God.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Sadly, if we are not confident about our choices, we can easily let other peoples' comments make us feel guilty and ruin the joy we need to experience in life through doing the little things that mean a lot to us.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

You can enjoy anything if you make up your mind too.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

God has gifted me in communication. He has given me a gift to be very open about myself, which seems to really help a lot of people. It's not even anything I do on purpose. It's just something I don't have a problem with. I don't care what you know about me if it will help you.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Five minutes of communication can save a year's worth of turmoil and misunderstanding.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Our television program airs to a potential audience of over 3 billion people, in many places where the people living there may have never even heard of Jesus.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Instead of being critical of people in authority over you and envious of their position, be happy you're not responsible for everything they have to do. Instead of piling on complaints, thank them for what they do. Overwhelm them with encouragement and appreciation!

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

We don't have to wait for something nice to happen to us, we can be aggressive and do something nice for ourselves.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Keep walking the walk, one step at a time.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I encourage you to be a person who is not afraid of responsibility. In meeting resistance you will build your strength. If you only do what is easy, you will always remain weak.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

The biggest thing I have to keep in mind is balance. I have certain times and days that I dedicate to certain responsibilities. It is very important to not become unbalanced in an area, spending too much time in one area and not another.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

When an injustice happens, we want to be vindicated. People feel that if they forgive the person who hurt them, then they will continue to take advantage of them or not take responsibility for what they did wrong. If we're honest, we'll admit that we usually want the person who hurt us to pay for what they did. We can't get past this until we get the revelation that only God can pay us back. He is our Vindicator - He will heal and restore us if we will trust Him and forgive our enemies as He has told us to do.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

We don't always help people by doing everything for them. That type of behavior can actually contribute to their problems because it helps then never take responsibility on their own.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Once we know the Word of God, we have a responsibility to be obedient to it.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

A lot of times, people feel that if they forgive the person who hurt them, then they will continue to take advantage of them or not take responsibility for what they did wrong.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

When you're in a leadership role, you can never please all of the people all of the time. There's also a lot of responsibility that goes along with it that others may not realize.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

It's so easy to settle for less than God's best for us because we don't always feel like taking responsibility for our behavior or putting forth some effort to do what we need to do so we can accomplish great things for God and help people. But the cost of settling for less is actually harder than being completely obedient to God's will.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Over the years, I've learned that a confident person doesn't concentrate or focus on their weaknesses - they maximize their strengths.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Compliment people. Magnify their strengths, not their weaknesses.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Because of the lingering discrimination, many women still lack confidence. They live in fear of stepping beyond what they feel is acceptable 'female' behavior. I can remember feeling that I wasn't 'normal' because I was aggressive, had dreams and goals, and wanted to do great things...I am glad now that I found courage to do something radical and chase my dreams.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Getting organized in the normal routines of life and finishing little projects you've started is an important first step toward realizing larger goals. If you can't get a handle on the small things, how will you ever get it together to focus on the big things?

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Better to have a big goal and reach half of it than to have no goal and reach all of it.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I think happiness is a goal all of us can agree on. Let's face it - we all would like to be happy.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

One mistake does not have to rule a person's entire life.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Forgiveness is not a feeling - it's a decision we make because we want to do what's right before God. It's a quality decision that won't be easy and it may take time to get through the process, depending on the severity of the offense.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Don't mourn over your bad decisions. Just start overcoming them with good ones.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

We worship God with our entire life - with every decision we make and everything we do.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Faith is a decision we make about where we are going to put our trust.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Here's one of my favorite statements: We are never going to enjoy stability, we are never going to enjoy spiritual maturity until we learn how to do what's right when it feels wrong, and every time you do what's right by a decision of your will using discipline and self control to go beyond how you feel, the more painful it is in your flesh, the more you're growing spiritually at that particular moment.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Peter was the only one who walked on water besides Jesus, but he was also the only one who got out of the boat. Until you make a decision to believe, and then act on it, nothing will happen.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

We're not like robots. God promises to guide us through the Holy Spirit, but He gives us the freedom to make our own decisions.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

When you need to make a decision, don't let your emotions vote.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

If you want to have sustained joy, you have to not only make sure that you think right, but you also have to make decisions now that are going to guarantee some joy in the future.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

We will never enjoy life unless we make a quality decision to do so.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I was afraid to let others make any decisions, because I had no confidence they would be concerned for me.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Contentment with life is not a feeling, but it is a decision we must make.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Forgiveness is not a feeling - it's a decision we make because we want to do what's right before God.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I'm jealous. I'm mad. I feel bad. But one day, I woke up and I thought, you know what? This is wearing me out. And I'm not getting anywhere. So, I decided that even though I did not have a good beginning, I made a decision that I was going to let go of what lies behind and I was going to have a great finish.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

Passion is a decision about how we will approach life, before it becomes a feeling!

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

I believe, when in my behavior or in relationships or in the way I react to something, that I'm still dealing with some leftover stuff from my childhood, but the good thing is now, because I have learned so much from the Bible, I can tell when I'm behaving wrong and when I'm not, and it doesn't take me very long to realize that's out of fear, or that's because I was controlled as a child, and I can make a conscious decision to behave the way I know I should behave.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

You can either keep walking in misery or make the decision to begin taking steps out of it.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

The first step to forgiveness is the desire to do it, no matter how you feel toward the person who hurt you. Then you make the decision to do it which means it's a firm decision that won't change when your feelings change. The next step is to depend on the Holy Spirit to help you do what you've decided to do.

Joyce Meyer
@JoyceMeyer

If we are ever going to develop an ability to hear from God and be led by His Spirit, we have to start making our own decisions and trust the wisdom God has deposited in our own heart.

Over time, I came to see reaching out to people as a way to make a difference in people's lives as well as a way to explore and learn and enrich my own; it became the conscious construction of my life's path.

When you help someone through a health issue, positively impact someone's personal wealth, or take a sincere interest in their children, you engender life-bonding loyalty.

The problem, as I see it, isn't what you're working on, it's whom you're working with.

Keith Ferrazzi

You can't feel in love with your life if you hate your work; and more times than not, people don't love their work because they work with people they don't like.

Power, today, comes from sharing information, not withholding it.

Until you become as willing to ask for help as you are to give it, however, you are only working half the equation.

The competition, on the other hand, got little press and failed to create a distinct message. It all goes back to your content. Once you have it, you can begin to mold it in a way that will capture attention. You need to impart a sense of urgency and make the message timely. Reporters continually ask, But why is it important now? If you can't answer that sufficiently, your article will wait. In YaYa's case, I highlighted how the games

That isn't always enough. I had written a piece for the Wall Street Journal's weekly column called the Manager's Journal. The editor liked the piece but kept pushing it back so he could publish other pieces that were timelier. So I began to rewrite the intros to my piece each week to relate to something that was in the news at the time. In short order, the article finally saw the light of day.

Authenticity—the unvarnished presentation of truth

Keith Ferrazzi
@ferrazzi

There's a scarcity of the authentic in our culture. So many people are liars:

Lifetime corporate employment is dead; we're all free agents now, managing our own careers across multiple jobs and companies. And because today's primary currency is information, a wide-reaching network is one of the surest ways to become and remain thought leaders of our respective fields.

Job security? Experience will not save you in hard times, nor will hard work or talent. If you need a job, money, advice, help, hope, or a means to make a sale, there's only one surefire, fail-safe place to find them - within your extended circle of friends and associates.

Connecting your story with a known entity—be it a politician, celebrity, or famous business person—acts as a de facto slant. Bottom line: The media want recognizable faces in their pages.

there are two types of people in this world: those who make excuses and those who get the job done. No excuses. You are 100 percent responsible for anything that has your name on it.

well over 50 percent of Americans are unhappy at work. Many of these people are doing well, but they are doing well at something they don't enjoy.

People who instinctively establish a strong network of relationships have always created great businesses.

Keith Ferrazzi
@ferrazzi

The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity.

Keith Ferrazzi
@ferrazzi

But while the power of generosity is not yet fully appreciated, or applied, in the halls of corporate America, its value in the world of networks is proven.

Keith Ferrazzi
@ferrazzi

One of the challenges that many of us run into is when we approach networking or relationship building with this idea of helping others, they often react with suspicion. 'Why do you want to help me? What's in it for you?'

Keith Ferrazzi

What has become clear is that we're not just connected to others. We are the very product of the people and networks to which we are connected.

Keith Ferrazzi
@ferrazzi

The Web is no longer just about the present-that crazy driver or this delicious meal. As we share messages, photos and updates, we're building a data trail about our lives and histories online.We can now tell stories not just about what is happening today, but where we've been, what we've shared, and what might happen in the future.

Keith Ferrazzi
@ferrazzi

A network functions precisely because there's recognition of mutual need. There's an implicit understanding that investing time and energy in building personal relationships with the right people will pay dividends. The majority of one percenters are in that top stratum because they understand this dynamic—because, in fact, they themselves used the power of their network of contacts and friends to arrive at their present station.

Keith Ferrazzi
@ferrazzi

Sticking to the people we know is a tempting behavior. But unlike some forms of dating. A networker isn't looking to achieve only a single successful union. Creating an enriching circle of trusted relationships requires one to be out there, in the mix, all the time.

People used to say there were only six degrees of separation between anyone in the world. A 2011 study of 720 million Facebook users determined the true magic number to be 4.74. More than ever before, zero-sum scenarios where only one party wins often mean, in the long run, that both parties will lose. Win-win has become a necessary reality in a networked world. In a hyper-connected marketplace, cooperation is gaining ground on competition. The game has changed.

Lao Tzu

Only fools seek power, and the greatest fools seek it through force.

Lao Tzu

Use justice to rule a country. Use surprise to wage war. Use non-action to govern the world.

Lao Tzu

When many people are killed, they should be mourned and lamented. Those who are victorious in war should follow the rites of funerals.

Lao Tzu

When the Way governs the world, the proud stallions drag dung carriages. When the Way is lost to the world, war horses are bred outside the city.

Lao Tzu

How could man rejoice in victory and delight in the slaughter of men?

Lao Tzu

When great armies go to war, Sorrow is the sole winner.

Lao Tzu

There is no calamity greater than lightly engaging in war.

Lao Tzu

Violence, even well-intentioned, always rebounds upon oneself.

Lao Tzu

Arms are instruments of ill omen... When one is compelled to use them, it is best to do so without relish. There is no glory in victory, and to glorify it despite this is to exult in the killing of men... When great numbers of people are killed, one should weep over them with sorrow. When victorious in war, one should observe mourning rites.

Lao Tzu

The most powerful weapon known is the weapon of blessing. Therefore, a clever person relies on it. He wins with peace, not with war.

Lao Tzu

The slaying of multitudes should be mourned with sorrow. A victory should be celebrated with the funeral rite.

Lao Tzu

With virtue and quietness, one may conquer the world.

Lao Tzu

If you close your mind in judgments and traffic with desires, your heart will be troubled. If you keep your mind from judging and aren't led by the senses, your heart will find peace.

Lao Tzu

Empty your mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return.

Lao Tzu

One cannot reflect in streaming water. Only those who know internal peace can give it to others.

Lao Tzu

Freedom from desire leads to inner peace.

Lao Tzu

The best soldier does not attack. The superior fighter succeeds without violence. The greatest conqueror wins without struggle. The most successful manager leads without dictating. This is an intelligent non-aggressiveness.

Lao Tzu

Weapons are the tools of violence; all decent men detest them. Weapons are the tools of fear; a decent man will avoid them except in the direst necessity and, if compelled, will use them only with the utmost restraint. Peace is his highest value. If the peace has been shattered, how can he be content? His enemies are not demons, but human beings like himself. He doesn't wish them personal harm. Nor does he rejoice in victory. How could he rejoice in victory and delight in the slaughter of men? He enters a battle gravely, with sorrow and with great compassion, as if he were attending a funeral

Lao Tzu

If there is to be peace in the home, There must be peace in the heart.

Lao Tzu

Without law or compulsion, men would dwell in harmony.

Lao Tzu

Free from desire, you realize the mystery, caught in the desire, you see only the manifestations.

Lao Tzu

All men desire to free themselves solely from death; they do not know how to free themselves from life.

Lao Tzu

Peacefulness is an inner sense of calm - it comes from becoming still - in order to reflect and meditate on our inner wisdom and receive answers. A peaceful heart is one that is free from worry and trouble. It's becoming quiet so we can look at things quietly so we can more clearly understand them and thus come up with creative solutions. It is learning to live in the present. Freedom from desire leads to inner peace.

Lao Tzu

Manifest plainness, embrace simplicity, reduce selfishness, have few desires.

Lao Tzu

To understand the limitations of things, desire them.

Lao Tzu

If one desires to receive one must first give. This is called profound understanding.

Lao Tzu

Who is unhappy with little, won't be with much; who doesn't appreciate the small won't be able to take care of the large; who doesn't have enough with enough is at the margin or virtue, for the physical body lives from one day to another and if it gets what it really needs, there will be time for meditation, as long as if we try to give it everything it desires, endless will be the task.

Lao Tzu

Lessen selfishness and restrain desires.

Lao Tzu

Without desire there is stillness, and the world settles by itself.

Lao Tzu

There is no greater crime than desire.

Lao Tzu

I have no desire to desire, and people become like the uncarved wood by themselves.

Lao Tzu

The sage desires no desire does not value rare treasures, learn without learning, recover what people have left behind.

Lao Tzu

The True Person benefits yet expects no reward, does the work, and moves on. There is no desire to be considered better than others.

Lao Tzu

There is no greater offense than harboring desires. There is no greater disaster than discontent. There is no greater misfortune than wanting more.

Lao Tzu

Embrace simplicity. Put others first. Desire little.

Lao Tzu

I let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes as common as the grass.

Lao Tzu

The Master's power is like this. He lets all things come and go effortlessly, without desire. He never expects results; thus he is never disappointed. He is never disappointed; thus his spirit never grows old.

Lao Tzu

Through a return to simple living comes control of desires. In control of desires, stillness is attained. In the stillness, the world is restored.

Lao Tzu

When you realize where you come from, you naturally become tolerant, amused, kindhearted as a grandmother, and dignified as a king. Immersed in wonder, you can deal with whatever life brings you, and when death comes, you are ready.

Lao Tzu

Men are born soft and supple; dead, they are stiff and hard. Plants are born tender and pliant; dead, they are brittle and dry. Thus whoever is stiff and inflexible is a disciple of death. Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life. The hard and stiff will be broken. The soft and supple will prevail.

Lao Tzu

Life is going forth; death is returning home.

Lao Tzu

Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides.

Lao Tzu

Love is the greatest link that we have with those who have temporarily left us.

Lao Tzu

There is one appointed supreme executioner. Truly, trying to take the place of the supreme executioner is like trying to carve wood like a master carpenter. Of those who try to carve wood like a master carpenter, there are few who do not injure their hands.

Lao Tzu

People take death lightly. They expect too much of life. That is why people take death lightly.

Lao Tzu

Truly, only acting without thought of one's life is superior to valuing one's life.

Lao Tzu

People are born soft and weak. They die hard and stiff.

Lao Tzu

All things such as grass and trees are soft and supple in life. At their death, they are withered and dry.

Lao Tzu

The hard and stiff are death's companions. The soft and weak are life's companions.

Lao Tzu

Let people take death seriously, and not travel far.

Lao Tzu

As soon as you have made a thought, laugh at it.

Lao Tzu

Pain and happiness are simply conditions of the ego. Forget the ego.

Lao Tzu

Seek not happiness too greedily and be not fearful of happiness.

Lao Tzu

Fame or integrity: which is more important? Money or happiness: which is more valuable? Success or failure: which is more destructive? If you look to others for fulfillment, you will never truly be fulfilled. If your happiness depends on money, you will never be happy with yourself. Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.

Lao Tzu

He who is contented is rich.

Lao Tzu

To produce things and to rear them, To produce, but not to take possession of them, To act, but not to rely on one's own ability, To lead them, but not to master them - This is called profound and secret virtue.

Lao Tzu

To attain the human form must always be a source of joy. And then to undergo continuous transitions, with only the infinite to look forward to what incomparable bliss is that!

Lao Tzu

To joy in conquest is to joy in the loss of human life.

Lao Tzu

The superior student listens to the Way and follows it closely. The average student listens to the Way and follows some and some not. The lesser student listens to the Way and laughs out loud. If there were no laughter it would not be the Way.

Lao Tzu

When superior people hear of the Way, they carry it out with diligence. When middling people hear of the Way, it sometimes seems to be there, sometimes not. When lesser people hear of the Way, they ridicule it greatly. If they didn't laugh at it, it wouldn't be the Way.

Lao Tzu

Every journey begins with a single step.

Lao Tzu

A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.

Lao Tzu

A tree that can fill the span of a man's arms grows from a downy tip; A terrace nine stories high rises from level earth; A journey of a thousand miles starts from beneath one's feet.

Lao Tzu

Meandering leads to perfection.

Lao Tzu

Good walking leaves no track behind it.

Lao Tzu

The tree which needs two arms to span its girth sprang from the tiniest shoot. Yon tower, nine stories high, rose from a little mound of earth. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Lao Tzu

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step and if that step is the right step, it becomes the last step.

Lao Tzu

Even the longest journey must begin where you stand.

Lao Tzu

The journey of a thousand miles starts from beneath your feet.

Lao Tzu

Those who know do not talk. Those who talk do not know.

Lao Tzu

When the student is ready the teacher will appear.

Lao Tzu

Much knowledge will corrupt the heart When partly understood, And so the people grow too smart But neither wise nor good.

Lao Tzu

If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.

Lao Tzu

To become learned, each day add something. To become enlightened, each day drop something.

Lao Tzu

The good man is the teacher of the bad, And the bad is the material from which the good may learn. He who does not value the teacher, Or greatly care for the material, Is greatly deluded although he may be learned. Such is the essential mystery.
